On January 24, organizations advocating for animal rights will protest in Mexico City, demanding access to care for the cats living at San Fernando Cemetery. Protest Against Animal Neglect at San Fernando Cemetery

Animal protection organizations in Mexico City plan to hold a protest on Friday, January 24th. This is due to the lack of action from local authorities to allow access to the San Fernando cemetery to tend to and care for the cats residing there.

The situation that has motivated this action began when the organization Catacumberitos shared on different platforms the precarious condition of the felines in the mentioned cemetery. They have indicated that there have already been reports of deaths among the resident cats. Despite this, the Citizen Attention of the capital government has postponed meetings, arguing alleged grievances towards the workers, although there are no records of such incidents.

Meanwhile, the situation of the cats in the cemetery has significantly worsened, and on Sunday, January 19th, reports were made of at least four deaths of these animals.

The protest for the cats of the San Fernando cemetery is scheduled for 3:00 PM on Friday, January 24th, with a meeting point at the Hidalgo station of Line 2 of the Mexico City Metro, near the San Fernando garden. From there, protesters will peacefully mobilize towards the cemetery facilities with the intention of having the authorities respond to the demands of animal protection organizations.

The organizations mainly demand that they be allowed access to care for the cats living in the San Fernando cemetery. It is estimated that around 40 cats need medical attention and basic care. In this regard, they request that Diana Arredondo, founder of Catacumberitos, be authorized to enter. Arredondo has been voluntarily providing care to the animals, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The precarious conditions in which these animals live have been evidenced in videos shared by the organization, where it can be seen that some of them have infections, are infested with insects, and lack food.
